While you can certainly call a professional carpet cleaner, the hefty cost and the time it takes may bother you to some extent. So, if you wish to be cost-effective and are prepared to spend some time yourself, here are some easy and quick methods to help you deal with it yourself. The key is following the right steps and using the right solvents.
You may use either of the following methods to get nail polish off carpet like a pro.

Method 1: Using Rubbing Alcohol
Things you’ll need:
- Rubbing alcohol
- Nail polish remover
- Cotton balls
- Paper towels
Step 1. Remove the excess nail polish
- Using a cotton ball with some nail polish remover on it, remove as much of the nail polish as possible.
Step 2. Pour rubbing alcohol over the stain
- Drop a few splashes of rubbing alcohol over the stain.
Step 3. Blot it gently
- Using a paper towel, blot up all the excess liquid from the carpet.
- Keep blotting until the stain completely disappears.
Method 2: Using Hair Spray
Things you’ll need:
- Hair spray
- Nail polish remover
- Cotton balls
- Paper towels
Step 1. Moisten and remove the excess polish
- Put a generous amount of nail polish remover on a cotton ball.
- Rub it over the stain to soak up as much excess polish as possible.
Nail polish remover not only moistens the spill but also helps absorb and lift the excess stain off the carpet.
Step 2. Spray some hair spray over the stain
- Spray some hair spray over the stain.
Step 3. Blot it up
- Blot the stained area carefully using a paper towel. Do not rub too hard.
- Keep going until the stain is completely gone.
Additional Tips
- It is advised to do a patch test with the cleaning agent on a small, inconspicuous spot on your carpet. If it does not cause any damage to your carpet, proceed to clean up the stain. Otherwise, try the other method.
- If you don’t have rubbing alcohol or hair spray, you may also use hydrogen peroxide, shaving cream, Goof Off, window cleaner or vanish carpet cleaner, which show varying degrees of success.
- Acetone is a strong chemical in many nail polish removers and can damage your carpet, so proceed with caution.
