Steps to Make Mouthwatering Potato Cheese Balls
Things you’ll need:
- Mashed potatoes (made with 4 to 5 potatoes)
- Corn flour
- Bread crumbs
- Eggs, beaten – 2
- Green onions, chopped – 2 tablespoons
- Jalapenos, chopped – 1 tablespoon
- Salt, as per your taste
- Cumin powder, ½ teaspoon
- Ground black pepper, ¼ teaspoon
- Cayenne pepper powder, as per your taste
- Cheddar cheese, cubed
- Oil
- Measuring spoons
- Mixing spoon
- Beater
- Pan
- Slotted spoon, spatula or skimmer spoon
- Paper towels
Step 1. Add salt to the mashed potatoes
Start by salting your mashed potatoes. If you’re using leftover mashed potatoes, chances are that they’re already salted and seasoned.
Start with only a pinch of salt. Remember, while adding too much spice will only make your food score “hot points”, adding too much salt usually makes it inedible.
Step 2. Add ground black pepper
Add ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper to the potatoes. We’ve used pre-ground black pepper here, but you can use freshly ground black pepper for a better flavor.
Step 3. Put in a little cayenne pepper powder
Depending on how spicy you like your food, measure out the desired quantity of cayenne pepper powder and add it to the potatoes.
Step 4. Add cumin powder
Add ½ teaspoon of cumin powder as well. Cumin has an earthy, nutty flavor that enhances the taste of the potatoes.
Step 5. Add chopped jalapenos
Add 1 tablespoon of chopped and seeded jalapenos to the bowl.
Step 6. Chop the onion greens
Chop the onion greens. Chop the bulb as well if you wish to add a little zingy flavor to the balls. Otherwise, save the bulb to incorporate into another dish. You can also plant that bulb in a pot and grow your own onion greens.
Step 7. Add chopped onion greens
Add 2 tablespoons of the chopped onion greens to the bowl.
Step 8. Mix the ingredients
Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Inadequate mixing will result in uneven flavors. Sneak a taste and adjust the seasoning.
Step 9. Make the cheese ball
Put a lump of potato mixture in your palm and make a hollow in it. Put a cube of cheese in the hollow and cover it with the potato mixture to make a ball. The size of the cheese cubes should be according to the size of the balls you want to prepare.
Step 10. Coat the cheese ball with corn flour
Place the cheese ball in the corn flour and roll it to cover the ball thoroughly.
Step 11. Roll it over the bread crumbs
Transfer the cheese ball to the bowl of bread crumbs. Lightly roll the ball over the crumbs to coat it evenly.
Step 12. Dip it in the egg batter
Beat 2 eggs. Dip the coated cheese ball in the beaten egg batter. The coating of corn flour and bread crumbs makes the surface of the ball firm enough so that it doesn’t fall apart in the egg batter.
A thin liquid mixture of cornstarch and water can serve as a substitute for eggs.
Step 13. Roll it over the bread crumbs again
After dipping the cheese ball in the egg batter, roll it over the bread crumbs again to cover it with a fresh layer.
Prepare all the cheese balls this way.
Step 14. Fry the cheese balls
Heat the oil in the pan. Transfer the cheese balls to the oil using a slotted spoon.
Fry the cheese balls over medium-low heat until they are golden brown.
Transfer the fried balls to paper towels, which will absorb any excess oil.
Depending on the size of your pan and the cheese balls, you can make a batch to fry together. This will save you time, energy and fuel/electricity. However, if you’re new to this, fry one cheese ball at a time as there’s no use spoiling a whole batch.
Step 15. Garnish and serve accordingly
Arrange the potato cheese balls on a platter, garnish and serve as a snack or appetizer. You can serve them with mayonnaise, mustard, pesto, hot sauce or any other dipping sauce of your choice.
Additional Tips
- If you are on an egg-free diet, you can use corn flour or cornstarch. Just mix 2 tablespoons of corn flour or cornstarch in some water to make a thin mixture.
- If you wish to make your cheese balls smaller in size, cut the cheese cubes accordingly smaller.
- Don’t forget to taste the mixture before making the balls, as you won’t be able to make any changes later.
- If the mixture has become too spicy or salty for your taste, add a little more mashed potato to balance the taste. You can even use corn flour for this purpose.
- Frying on high heat might overcook your cheese balls on the outside, while the inside remains underdone. Medium-low heat is preferable.
