Giving in to your dessert craving is one of the best feelings in the world. Sadly, satisfying a craving for something sweet and homemade often requires some painstaking effort that you may feel disinclined to undertake.
If you’re dreaming about devouring a decadent dessert, read on to find out how you can make one in just 5 minutes.
A busy lifestyle leaves little time to spend in the kitchen. This makes people usually stick with store-bought desserts. While there’s nothing wrong with a prepackaged dessert, including it in your regular diet may not be economically feasible. Even if you can afford it, prepackaged foods often contain preservatives to prolong the shelf life.
A 5-minute chocolate mug cake is a perfect solution. With some simple ingredients, minimal effort and 2-minutes of cooking time, you can easily satiate your dessert cravings.
If you follow a vegan lifestyle, there’s also an eggless and dairy-free option.
Here are two methods for making chocolate mug cake in microwave in just 5 minutes:
Method 1: Using an Egg
Things you’ll need:
- Milk – 3 tablespoons
- All-purpose flour – 4 tablespoons
- Egg – 1
- Caster sugar – 4 tablespoons
- Cocoa powder, unsweetened – 2 tablespoons
- Vanilla essence – ½ teaspoon
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil – 3 tablespoons
- Chocolate chips – 3 tablespoons
Step 1. Whisk an egg
Put 1 whole egg in a mixing bowl and whisk it thoroughly.
Step 2. Assemble the rest of the ingredients
- Add 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the bowl with the whisked egg.
- Pour in 3 tablespoons of milk.
- Add 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, followed by 4 tablespoons of caster sugar.
- Add 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips to the bowl. Chocolate chips will add to the chocolaty flavor and give the cake a nice texture.
- Pour in 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. You can use any oil of your choice here. Use an oil whose flavor will go nicely with your chocolate cake.
- Finally, put in 1 teaspoon of baking powder, followed by ½ teaspoon of vanilla essence.
Step 3. Whisk the ingredients together
Whisk the entire contents of the bowl thoroughly. You can either do this using a simple wire whisk or an electric whisk. Whisk until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
Step 4. Transfer the batter to a microwave-safe mug
- Pour the whisked batter into your favorite mug.
- Ensure that the mug is microwave-safe before using it.
- If your mugs are small, you can distribute the batter in multiple mugs.
Step 5. Microwave the mug cake
- Pop the mug into the microwave and cook it on the highest power. While our mug cake was done in 2 minutes, your cooking time may vary depending on your microwave. Start with 1 minute 30 seconds on full power and see how it goes from there.
- When the cake feels solid upon pressing on the top, consider it done. You can also use a toothpick to check its doneness.
Enjoy your delectable microwave mug cake hot or cold. You can also lightly dust it with caster sugar.
Method 2: Without Using an Egg or Dairy Products
Things you’ll need:
- All-purpose flour – 5 tablespoons
- Caster sugar – 4½ tablespoons
- Cocoa powder, unsweetened – 2 tablespoons
- Baking soda – ¼ teaspoon
- Dash of salt
- Vanilla essence – ¼ teaspoon
- White vinegar – ½ teaspoon
- Vegetable oil – 2 teaspoons + more for greasing the mug
- Water – 4½ tablespoons
Step 1. Whisk all the dry ingredients together
- Put 5 tablespoons of all-purpose flour in a mixing bowl.
- Add 4½ tablespoons of caster sugar to it, followed by 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Add in ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of salt.
- Whisk the dry ingredients thoroughly using a wire whisk.
Step 2. Add in the liquids and whisk
- Add ¼ teaspoon of vanilla essence to the mixing bowl, followed by ½ teaspoon of white vinegar.
- Add in 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil as well.
- Finally, pour in 4½ tablespoons of water.
- Whisk the mixture thoroughly into a smooth batter that’s free of any lumps.
Step 3. Grease the mug
To stop the cake from sticking to the walls of the mug, brush it with some vegetable oil. Greasing the mug makes the extraction easy. Be sure to use a microwave-safe mug.
Step 4. Pour in the batter
Pour the cake batter into the greased mug.
Step 5. Microwave the mug cake
Pop the mug into the microwave and cook on high power for about 2 minutes. Cooking time may differ with different microwaves. Adjust your cooking time accordingly.
You can enjoy your eggless chocolate mug cake in or out of the mug. Enjoy this yummy cake with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and a sprinkle of chocolate chips. For a true vegan delight, you can opt for vegan ice cream to go with this cake. You can also douse this cake in some chocolate sauce before devouring it.
Additional Tips
- If you’re not a fan of washing dishes, you can skip using a mixing bowl and mix the batter directly in the cup. But be warned that it will be messy and not a great idea when you have company.
- If you don’t have a wire whisk, you can also make do with a fork.
- Do not overcook your mug cake, as it will end up with a rubbery texture. Cook in short bursts until your cake is done to prevent overcooking.
- When making more than one mug cake, microwave them one at a time.
- Never fill the mug all the way to the top. The cake will rise while cooking and make a mess inside your microwave. Only fill the mug a little more than halfway with batter.
- Always grease the mugs before pouring in the batter if you plan to extract the cake from the mug later on.
- Don’t limit yourself just because the trend started off as a mug cake. You can easily bake it in mason jars, microwave-safe paper cups, silicon molds or even ramekin bowls.
