Or did you go to the beach to hang out with your friends and family sunbathing and having a good time?
Whichever way you got that tan, if you look like a sun-kissed beauty, then good for you!
However, if your tan is not what you expected and its unevenness looks hideous, you’ve got to do something about it before that important meeting or cocktail party.
Fret not. We have some very refreshing and effective homemade face masks for you that use common, everyday products to remove that tan.

Method 1: Gram Flour Mask
Gram flour is a natural skin exfoliator, with skin-lightening and brightening agents. When mixed with other ingredients, this mask will help remove a tan while also soothing your skin.
Aloe vera is wonderful for soothing skin that’s irritated and inflamed by the sun. Turmeric powder curbs the sebaceous glands, inhibiting their ability to produce excess oil. It also reduces dark spots and skin pigmentation.
Lemon is a natural bleach for the skin. It is also rich in vitamin C and tightens the skin, preventing premature wrinkle formation.
Things you’ll need:
- Gram flour – 2 tablespoons
- Aloe vera gel – 1 tablespoon
- Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – a pinch
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 2 tablespoons of gram flour in a bowl.
- Extract 1 tablespoon of gel from an aloe vera leaf and add it to the gram flour.
- Pour 1 teaspoon of lemon juice into the mix.
- Add a pinch of turmeric powder.
- Mix it well to make a paste.
Step 2. Apply the mask and leave it on for about 10 min
- Apply the paste to your face.
- Leave it on for 10 to 12 minutes or until it dries.
- If it dries, dampen the pack with a little bit of water post the sitting time.
- Slowly and gently scrub the paste around your face in circular motions, then rinse it off with water.
Use this face pack twice a week for best results.
Method 2: Citrus Peel Powder Mask
Almonds are rich in vitamin E and contain monounsaturated fats, potassium, zinc, and various other vitamins and minerals. It is an amazing nut to add to your cereals and salads. It’s also beneficial for your hair and skin.
Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties and is an antioxidant, that soothes the skin and helps with skin rejuvenation.
Orange peel has high amounts of vitamin C that strengthens the collagen. Milk is a remarkable component to increase and maintain moisture in the skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Ground almonds – 1 tablespoon
- Ground oatmeal – 1 tablespoon
- Ground orange peel – 1 tablespoon
- Milk – enough to make a paste
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 1 tablespoon of ground oatmeal in a bowl. You can prepare the ground oatmeal out of rolled oats.
- Make a powder using 4 or 5 almonds. Add 1 tablespoon of it to the ground oatmeal.
- Add 1 tablespoon of orange peel powder. You can dry orange peels under the sun and grind them in a blender to make the powder.
- Mix in enough milk to make a thick, consistent paste.
Step 2. Apply the mask and leave it on for 20 to 25 min
- Apply the paste using an applicator brush, covering your entire face.
- Leave the pack on for 20 to 25 minutes.
- Wash it off with water.
Use this face mask twice or thrice a week. You can use it daily if you want to achieve faster results.
Method 3: Aloe Vera & Tomato Mask
Aloe vera is well-known for its moisturizing properties as well as its nutrient content that soothes inflammation, hydrates the skin, and makes it soft and supple.
Tomatoes have natural astringent properties that cleanse the pores, removing all the dirt and oil lodged in them. Also, they are rich in antioxidants that improve the skin’s elasticity, eluding wrinkles for a more extended period of time.
Another agent for minimizing a tan, dark spots and acne scars is rice powder. It effectively sloughs off dried and darkened skin, making way for new skin to grow in its place.
Things you’ll need:
- Rice powder – 1½ tablespoons
- Aloe vera gel – ½ tablespoon
- Tomato puree – 1 tablespoon
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 1½ tablespoons of rice powder in a bowl.
- Make a puree out of ½ of a tomato. Add 1 tablespoon of the puree to the rice powder.
- Add ½ tablespoon of aloe vera gel to the mix.
- Blend all the ingredients well.
Step 2. Apply to your face and leave it on for 20 min
- Apply the paste and leave it on your face for 20 minutes.
- Wash it off with water.
Use this face mask daily to see visible results.
Method 4: Clay & Papaya Mask
Clay has skin lightening and oil-reducing agents.
Papaya is rich in vitamin A that heals dry and scaly skin and vitamin C that induces the production of collagen, reducing a tan, visible dark spots, age spots, and other skin aging signs.
It also contains papain, which helps in the regeneration of new skin and softens the skin. The honey in this mask will help rehydrate your tanned skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Papaya, mashed – 2 tablespoons
- Organic raw honey – 1 tablespoon
- Earth clay – 2 tablespoons
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 2 tablespoons each of earth clay and mashed papaya pulp into a mixing bowl.
- Pour 1 tablespoon of organic raw honey into the bowl.
- Whip the ingredients until you have a consistent paste.
Step 2. Apply the face mask and leave it on for 30 min
- Apply the mask evenly on your entire face.
- Leave it on for 30 minutes.
- Wash it off with water.
Use this mask thrice a week to get rid of your tanning.
Method 5: Oatmeal & Yogurt Mask
It doesn’t get much simpler than this mask. It uses only two basic ingredients – oatmeal and yogurt. Oatmeal is anti-inflammatory, which heals and soothes suntanned or burned skin.
The lactic acid present in yogurt acts as a bleaching agent, brightening the skin by reducing the pigmentation and spots.
Things you’ll need:
- Plain yogurt – enough to make a paste
- Ground oatmeal – 2 tablespoons
Step 1. Mix both the ingredients well
- Put 2 tablespoons ground oatmeal in a bowl and add enough yogurt to make a thick paste.
- Mix them well.
Step 2. Apply the paste to your face and leave it on for 20 min
- Apply the paste to your face.
- Leave it on for 20 minutes.
- Wash it off with tepid water.
Use this mask thrice a week.
Method 6: Cucumber Mask
Cucumber and aloe vera both have anti-inflammatory properties that can heal inflamed skin and relax the tensed epidermis, while rosewater and almond act as astringent and skin tightening agents respectively.
Lemon juice is a natural bleach that lightens the skin. Almond is rich in vitamin E, which promotes the skin's elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Things you’ll need:
- Cucumber juice – ½ tablespoon
- Rosewater – enough to make a paste
- Lemon juice – 1 teaspoon
- Almond powder – 1 tablespoon
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 1 tablespoon of ground almonds in a bowl.
- Add ½ tablespoon of freshly extracted cucumber juice to it.
- Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and some rose water if needed. You don’t want your paste to be too runny.
- Mix the contents well to make a thick paste.
Step 2. Apply the mask and leave it on for 10 min
- Apply the mixture on your face and leave it on for 10 minutes or until it is dry.
- Wash it off with tepid water and pat your skin dry.
Applying this face pack every day will lighten even the toughest of the suntan.
Method 7: Sugar & Lemon Face Cleanser
Sugar acts as an exfoliator and scrubs away the tanned and dead skin cells, making way for a new and healthy skin.
Glycerin moisturizes the skin and lemon lightens the skin by removing the suntan, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation.
Things you’ll need:
- Sugar – 2 tablespoons
- Glycerin – 1 teaspoon
- Lemon juice – enough to make a paste
Step 1. Combine all the ingredients and mix well
- Put 2 tablespoons of sugar in a bowl.
- Add 1 teaspoon of glycerin and enough lemon juice to make a thick and consistent paste.
- Mix everything well.
Step 2. Apply this paste and gently scrub your face
- Cover your entire face with a thin layer of the paste.
- Start massaging your face gently in upward circular motions.
- Scrub the T-zone, the sides of your nose and the ends of your mouth.
- Let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Wash it off with water.
Use this scrub twice a week to remove a tan and keep your skin free of dead skin cells and other impurities.
Additional Tips
- Refrain from using a product to which you are allergic. Alternatively, skip that ingredient of the mask and apply the rest.
- Discontinue the usage of a face mask if it is adversely affecting you.
- Cover yourself with a cloth or a stole to avoid tanning.
- Carry an umbrella with you all the time.
It is hard to escape the sun rays where ever you might go, or use any sunblock lotion or creams, it goes in vain. You need not worry when you know how to remove tan using home remedies which are quite easy to make.
