Dry and dull skin can give you a worn-out appearance and make you look older than your age. In fact, excessive dryness can cause irreversible damage to your skin, turning it dark and scaly. Dryness often makes your skin itchy and, if left unchecked, it can lead to more severe conditions like eczema or dermatitis.
Skin dryness occurs when your skin is unable to retain moisture. Skin often becomes dry and flaky during the winter months, when there is less moisture in the air.
Other factors leading to dry skin include taking long, hot showers; using harsh soap or cosmetic products with harmful chemicals; contact with strong household cleaning ingredients like floor cleaners that take a toll on your skin; and allergies.
While there are several commercial moisturizers available in the market for dry skin, most of them contain chemical products that can react with your sensitive skin and will cost you an arm and a leg to buy.
You really don’t need those products. Several homemade face masks for dry skin can nourish and hydrate your skin.

If you are a fan of using natural products on your skin, you can use skin masks made with natural ingredients to combat dryness, lighten your skin, reduce acne, cleanse your face and get rid of dark spots on your face.
Here are five tried-and-true homemade face masks for dry skin to nourish and moisturize your skin.
Contents
Method 1: Coconut & Honey Mask
Virgin coconut oil is rich in saturated fats that nourish and moisturize your skin without making it oily or greasy. It also has antimicrobial properties that prevent and control acne breakouts and skin infections.
Honey also has strong antibacterial properties and hydrates skin, locking in the moisture to give it a soft feel. Lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties and lends a delicate fragrance to your skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Virgin coconut oil (nourishes and moisturizes) – 2 tablespoons
- Raw honey (acts as humectant) – ¼ cup
- Lavender essential oil (reduces inflammation) – 2 or 3 drops
Step 1. Combine coconut oil, honey and lavender essential oil in a bowl

- Put ¼ cup of raw honey in a mixing bowl.

You can apply this rich homemade face mask for dry skin twice a week to get soft, supple and well-moisturized skin. You will see and feel a visible difference in your skin after your first application.
Method 2: Banana Mask
Bananas are an extremely nutritious fruit with multiple health benefits. But did you know that it is also highly beneficial for your skin and hair?
This tropical fruit contains moisture along with minerals like potassium and vitamins E and C that work to replenish and hydrate your skin.
Raw honey helps lock in moisture and gives a warm, golden glow to your face. Yogurt further nourishes and soothes your dry, itchy skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Bananas (nourishes and moisturizes) – 2
- Raw honey (acts as humectant) – 1 tablespoon
- Yogurt (lightens and soothes skin) – ¼ cup
Step 1. Peel and mash 2 bananas

- Peel 2 ripe bananas and place them in a mixing bowl.
- Use a fork to mash them into a lumpy puree.
Step 2. Add yogurt and honey

- Add ¼ cup of yogurt into the mashed banana puree.
- Add 1 tablespoon of raw honey as well.
Step 3. Mix well and apply it on your face

- Use a spatula to mix everything up.
- Use a cosmetic brush to apply the face mask.
- Leave it on for 20 minutes or until it dries completely.
- Wash it off with warm water and gently dry your skin with a soft towel.
You can also apply a light cream to retain the moisture.
Use this homemade face mask for dry skin 2 or 3 times a week and say goodbye to dry, itchy skin. Regular use will leave you with well-hydrated, radiant skin.
Method 3: Aloe Vera & Milk Cream Mask
Aloe vera has long been used in traditional Eastern medicinal therapy, due to its antibacterial and skin-healing properties. In fact, you can heal minor burns by simply applying aloe vera gel directly on the burn.
This wonderful gel also works to reduce sunburns, acne and scars.
The gel alone can have a drying effect on your skin, so we’ve combined it with milk cream that is rich in fats and works to nourish and moisturize your skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Aloe vera gel (heals and soothes skin) – 2 tablespoons
- Milk cream (nourishes and moisturizes) – ¼ cup
Step 1. Combine aloe vera gel and milk cream in a bowl

- Pour ¼ cup of pure, rich milk cream into a mixing bowl.
- Add 2 tablespoons of fresh aloe vera gel.
Step 2. Blend and apply the mask on your face

- Blend the ingredients thoroughly.
- Apply the mask on your face using a cosmetic brush.
- Wait 30 minutes to let your skin absorb all the moisture and nutrients from the milk cream and aloe vera.
- Wash it off with warm water and gently pat dry your skin with a soft towel.
You do not need to apply any other cream after using this super-moisturizing face mask.
You can apply this rich blend up to 4 times a week to rejuvenate your dry and damaged skin.
Method 4: Oatmeal, Milk & Honey Mask
Powdered oatmeal is a highly beneficial ingredient for use on dry skin. It acts as a gentle scrub that removes dead skin cells and dirt from your skin, while also moisturizing and soothing it.
In fact, due to its anti-inflammatory properties and amino acids that help repair and heal skin, an oatmeal scrub effectively treats red, itchy skin. Milk is rich in fats and nutrients that further help rejuvenate your dry and damaged skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Oatmeal powder (gently exfoliates) – 2 tablespoons
- Raw honey (acts as humectant) – 2 tablespoons
- Milk powder (deeply nourishes your skin) – 2 teaspoons
- Lavender essential oil (reduces inflammation) – 2 or 3 drops
Step 1. Combine powdered oatmeal and milk with honey and lavender oil

- Put 2 tablespoons of powdered oatmeal in a bowl.
- Add 2 teaspoons of milk powder as well.
- Pour in 2 tablespoons of raw honey.
- Add 2 or 3 drops of lavender essential oil.
Step 2. Mix well and apply it on your face

- Blend everything together.
- Use a cosmetic brush to apply a thin layer of this mask over your face.
- Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.
- Apply a light, moisturizing cream to seal in the moisture.
Apply this homemade face mask for dry skin 3 or 4 times a week to heal and repair your skin.
Since oatmeal has soothing properties, you can also apply this face mask to provide relief from irritation and redness caused by dryness.
Method 5: Egg & Olive Oil Mask
The bright yellow egg yolk contains water and fats that not only nourish and hydrate your skin but also work to lock in moisture.
Olive oil is another light oil that replenishes your skin without making it feel greasy. It also contains vitamin E, which lends greater elasticity to your skin. Adding banana as well, this face mask is highly recommended for those who have extremely dry and flaky skin.
Things you’ll need:
- Egg yolk (seals in moisture) – 1
- Extra-virgin olive oil (contains Vitamin E) – 1 tablespoon
- Banana (nourishes and moisturizes) – ½
Step 1. Separate an egg yolk

- Crack open an egg and pour the whites in a bowl, keeping the yolk in the shell.
- Carefully transfer the egg yolk into a separate bowl.
Step 2. Peel and mash half of a banana

- Peel and chop ½ of a banana. This makes mashing it easier.
- Use a fork to mash it into a puree.
Step 3. Add the egg yolk and olive oil

- Add the egg yolk to the banana puree.
- Add 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil as well.
Step 4. Mix well and apply it on your skin

- Whisk the ingredients to get a uniform blend.
- Apply a thick layer of this mask on your face, using circular motions.
- Give it 15 minutes to settle on your skin and dry on its own.
- Wash it off with cold water and gently pat dry your skin.
- Use 2 or 3 drops of coconut oil to further moisturize your skin.
Use this homemade face mask for dry skin 1 or 2 times a week to nourish dry, dull and damaged skin.
Tips
- Pull your hair back in a ponytail or secure it with a hair clip to prevent it from sticking to your face after applying a face mask.
- You can also put on a hair band to push back your hair from your forehead.
- Apply these face masks while standing over your bathroom or kitchen sink to avoid making a mess on the floor.
- You can also apply pure coconut or olive oil on your face at night, if you have extremely dry skin.
My skin has always been dry so I decided to try out Banana mask for dry skin
The recipe was very easy to follow and these ingredients I always have at my house.
I smashed the bananas with a fork , added honey and yogurt . I then applied the mask with a small brush which was a bit of a mess and let it sit for about 20 mins. The smell of food on my face was a bit strange experience , but other than that it was not too bad.
After rinsing it off, I definitely felt my skin softer. I still had to use moisturiser after that though.
I think I will have a go at it again sometime soon to see the ongoing benefits
All the best
Anna

I tried out one of the banana masks – half a banana, one egg yolk and a tablespoon of olive oil.
This mask was so easy to make as it uses ingredients that most people already have at home. My skin is really sensitive as well as dry and this mask was nice and gentle, and left my skin feeling softer within just a few minutes of washing it off.

I tried the banana mask. It was easy to make and felt nice and refreshing when I put it on. Getting close to 20 minutes I started to feel a little tingling feeling and then I washed it off. The skin after realy feels smoother, moist and elastic. And another great thing is, that you can treat yourself with the leftovers. 🙂

Very nice informational web site
I tried the banana, egg yolk and olive oil mask and it worked well. Is it okay to save the leftovers to use later this week?
Dear Natalie
Thank you for your feedback. It is better to make a fresh batch every time. As the recipe contains banana, it isn’t advisable to save it for later use. Hope we were able to help.

How about Aloe Vera & Milk Cream Mask. Do we need to make a fresh batch every time? Thanks a lot.
Hi Armels
Thank you for the question.
So, we suggest that you do prepare a fresh batch before every application for best results.
However, you may refrigerate the mask for a day or two, but the texture and product wont be as great as a freshly prepared mask.
Hope this helps!
Are there substitutes to milk cream and milk powder? Thanks!
Why isn’t the banana safe for later use?
Hi Quinasia
Thank you for your comment.
We don’t advice using the leftover banana mask, as it starts turning black. It might lose its potent properties and harm your skin.
For best results, it is better that you prepare it fresh and use

Hi, by milk cream do you mean just regular heavy cream? Like the one that is used to cook with?
Is it ok to use the banana mask twice a day ?
Hi Musna
The standard usage suggests applying the mask 2-3 times a week. However, if you have extremely dry skin, you can use this mask once daily. If it gives you the desired results, you could gradually move up with the frequency of use up to 2 times a day.
Hope we were able to help.
I made the olive oil, egg and banana mask and it worked well. I did not want to waste the leftover so I used it as hair mask too. My hair and face are well nourished. Thank you for the recepies.
