Do you love makeup, but the makeup does not love you back?
Be it a dash of ultra smooth face powder, rosy-tinted lip gloss, and blush or the deepest black kohl for those flattering eyes. If all these are part of your everyday morning ritual, you will agree that your beauty is consuming a lot from your bank account. Cosmetics are also loaded with various chemicals, and no matter how much they claim to be skin-friendly, it’s a faux mate!
These beauty products comprise harmful dyes, preservatives, and toxins that can damage your skin, cause cancer, and affect your endocrine system. Scary, right?
There are few brands that use skin-friendly and natural ingredients, but let’s not even start with the exorbitant price tags that they carry. However, you could make your own homemade makeup with natural ingredients.
As daunting as it may sound, making your own makeup products is not rocket science. You do not need a degree in cosmetology. You may not be able to break into the beauty industry, or maybe one day you will. Good luck with that! But you certainly can save your skin from the harmful stuff.
To get you started, here are the eight recipes to make homemade makeup that you can try using simple household ingredients.
Remember, for anything that you make; you will have to adjust the ingredients to get the desired coloring.

Method 1: Homemade Foundation Powder
Foundation powder is the most elementary item in the world of makeup. It helps even out your skin tone and gives a flawless complexion. In this method, we have used arrowroot powder as the base and added cocoa powder and cinnamon for the tint. Cocoa powder helps repair skin damage.
Things you’ll need:
- Arrowroot powder(softens skin) - 1 tablespoon
- Cocoa powder (repairs skin damage) - 1 teaspoon
- Cinnamon powder (prevents acne) - 1 teaspoon
Step 1. Blend cocoa powder and cinnamon powder
- Start with taking 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder in a bowl.
- Now add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder to the cocoa powder.
Step 2. Add arrowroot powder to get the desired tint and store
- Add 1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder to the cocoa and cinnamon powder.
- Mix all the ingredients well.
- Test the color on the inside of your arm. You can increase or decrease the quantity of the two ingredients to match the powder with your skin tone.
- Scoop the prepared foundation powder in an easy-to-use container.
- Apply like a regular face powder using a soft makeup brush.
Method 2: Homemade Foundation Cream
Give a smooth finish to your base makeup, as well as offer more nourishment and coverage to your skin with this DIY foundation cream.
Things you’ll need:
- Organic Almond Oil - ¼ cup
- Mango butter - 2 tablespoons
- Cocoa Butter - 2 tablespoon
- Beeswax (optional) - 1 tablespoon
- Vitamin E Oil Capsules - 2
- Zinc Oxide Powder - 1 tablespoon
- Cinnamon Powder - 1 teaspoon
- Cocoa Powder - 1 teaspoon
Step 1. Melt and mix butter, oil, and beeswax in a double boiler
- Place a large pan on the stove and fill it a quarter with water. Put a heat-proof glass bowl inside the pan, and your double boiler is ready.
- Start pouring ¼ cup of organic almond oil in the bowl.
- Drop 1 tablespoon of beeswax. Optionally adding beeswax helps it to solidify easily.
- Add 2 tablespoons of mango butter and 2 tablespoons of cocoa butter.
- Prick and squeeze out oil from 2 vitamin E capsules.
- Stir the ingredients on medium heat until the butter melt and all the ingredients blend well.
Step 2. Remove from heat and add zinc oxide powder
- Remove the bowl from the double boiler and let it cool down for a few minutes.
- Once the mix begins to solidify, whisk it vigorously to remove the lumps and to get a cream-like consistency.
- Keep whisking and add 1 tablespoon of zinc oxide Blend it thoroughly in the mix.
Step 3. Add cinnamon and cocoa powder to the mix
- Add 1 teaspoon each of cocoa powder and cinnamon powder while whisking continuously.
- You can test the mixture on your inner arm to match the cream color with the tone of your skin. If needed, increase the quantity of cocoa and cinnamon powder to darken the shade or zinc oxide powder to lighten it.
Step 4. Transfer to a container and store
- Pour out the cream in a lidded jar and store it in a cool place.
- Try to utilize the cream within a month.

- Continue to stir the ingredients until the beeswax melts completely and blends with both the coconut oil and castor oil.
- Once the ingredients have blended, remove them from the heat.
- Before the mix begins to solidify, transfer it to an empty mascara bottle. Use a funnel to avoid spillage.
- Close the cap and wait for 30 to 60 minutes to allow the mascara to set, then use as required.
The shelf life of mascara is 1 to 2 months.

If you want the lip balm to have a longer shelf life (2 to 3 months), add beetroot powder instead of beetroot juice.
You can adjust the quantity of the juice for a darker or lighter tint in the lip balm.
Things you’ll need:
- Grated beeswax - 1 tablespoon
- Cocoa butter(heals dry skin) - ½ tablespoon

Method 7: Makeup Remover Wipes
You can make your own DIY makeup removal wipes using coconut oil and castile soap. It is easy to make and use, and costs next to nothing.
When buying coconut oil, choose unrefined, extra-virgin coconut oil, since it is the least processed.
If you are allergic to coconut oil, you can use olive oil or castor oil instead.
Things you’ll need:
- Coconut oil (moisturizes skin)—2 tablespoons
- Distilled water—1 cup
- Castile soap (cleanser)—4 or 5 drops
- Essential oil (healing properties)—4 or 5 drops
- Paper towel roll
Step 1. Mix coconut oil, mild soap, and essential oil
- Pour 1 cup of distilled water into a jar. Distilled water increases the shelf life.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil with the water.
- Add 4 or 5 squirts of a mild soap to the solution.
- Also, add 4 or 5 drops of your favorite essential oil. It is best to add a few drops of tea tree oil to the solution to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria on the wipes.
- Whisk the ingredients together until you get a sudsy cleanser.
Step 2. Cut a paper towel roll to fit in a lidded jar
- Cut a paper towel roll using a knife to a size that will fit into a lidded jar. Alternatively, you can use organic cotton pads in place of paper towels.
- Place the cut roll into the jar.
Step 3. Pour the cleanser over the paper roll
- Pour the cleanser over the paper towel roll in the jar.
- Press down on the roll and place the lid on the jar.
- Shake well to evenly distribute the solution into each layer of the paper roll.
Step 4. Remove the cardboard cylinder
- Remove the cardboard cylinder from the paper towel roll.
Step 5. Use the wipes to remove your makeup
- Use your homemade cleansing wipes to remove your makeup in a jiffy.
The wipes will last for 20 to 30 days, depending on the climate and the container used for storage.
Tips to keep in mind
- You can clean your makeup brushes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of castile soap. Dab your dirty makeup brushes in the oil–shampoo blend and rinse with water.
- Dust your lashes with arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch first to thicken and lengthen them before applying the mascara.
