Steps to Make Rose Water at Home for Beauty Uses

  • Saucepan with a lid
  • Flat stones
  • Ice cubes
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Sterilized container for storage

Step 1. Wash roses and separate the petals

Before you begin the process of making rose water, you need to separate the petals from the rose flowers. Remember, you only want the petals. Discard the stems and leaves.

Begin by immersing 3 or 4 roses in a bowl of clean water. Wash them thoroughly to remove the dirt and any other unwanted substances. Then, separate the petals from the roses and set them aside in a separate bowl.

The petals are soft and delicate, so handle them with care. Also, be aware of the thorns usually present on the stem.

Place several flat stones in a medium or large saucepan.

These flat stones are extremely important in this process. They serve as a stable base for the bowl that will be added in the next step.

Step 3. Place a bowl on the stones

Place a bowl on top of the stones and in the middle of the saucepan.

Use a heat-resistant or microwave-safe bowl as it will sit in boiling water for about 30 minutes during the process ahead.

Step 4. Fill the empty spaces on the sides with rose petals

Gently press the rose petals in as you keep adding more to ensure you don't leave even the tiniest bit of space empty.


Step 5. Add distilled water and put the pan on the stove

Make sure you add the water from the sides and do not spill any over in the bowl in the center of the pan. Use just enough water to immerse the rose petals.

Using too much will result in rose water that is too diluted.

Step 6. Place the lid on, upside down

Overturn the lid, and place it on the pan upside down. The handle of the lid should be pointing toward the center of the bowl. This is crucial to the condensation process.

Step 7. Boil and simmer the water

Turn on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil on high heat. Once the water boils, reduce the temperature, and let the water simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 8. Place ice cubes on the lid


When you notice the steam building on the lid of the pan, place several ice cubes at the center of the inverted lid, covering the entire surface.

Ice will help the steam condense on the lid, roll down the handle, and drip into the bowl in the center of the pan.

As the ice cubes begin to melt, continually add more until this process is finished.


You may need to continue placing the ice cubes on the lid several times in this step.

Step 10. Turn the stove off

After 30 minutes, turn off the stove. Allow the saucepan to cool down a bit before removing the lid.

Once you open the lid, you will notice the rose petals have become white, and the water has taken on the color of the petals. You will also see a light-colored liquid present in the bowl at the center of the pan now.

Step 11. Remove the bowl

Carefully, remove the bowl with the rose water from the pan.

Lightly touch with a finger before picking it up to see if the bowl is still hot. In case it is, wait until it cools completely and then carefully remove it from the pan.

Step 12. Transfer the rose water into a sterile container


Allow the rose water to cool completely, then transfer it into a sterilized container. To sterilize the container, boil it in water for a few minutes, and dry it thoroughly.

Tighten the lid on the container and store your rose water in the refrigerator. You can use this homemade rosewater for 2 to 3 weeks after which it must be discarded and made afresh.

You can also store it in a spray bottle if you like, and use it as a spray-on toner, face mist, or perfume to make your clothes smell fresh and fragrant. Rosewater along with glycerin and lemon juice can be used to get rid of dark spots.
