We use our hands for countless things, but unfortunately, most of us do not take proper care of them. Exposure to cold or dry weather and excessive exposure to water will result in dry, wrinkled and chapped hands.

Sometimes, lotions and moisturizers are just not enough to heal dry, cracked hands. To make your hands soft, you need to remove the dead skin cells from the surface of your hands and take measures to moisturize them.

Exfoliating your hands on a regular basis with a naturally moisturizing scrub will give you a pair of soft, supple and happy hands!

Here we are providing detailed instructions to make two homemade scrubs for softer hands using simple ingredients. If you want a quick tutorial instead, here's a video to go.

Homemade Hand Scrub - Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey

Things you’ll need:

  • ½ cup uncooked fine oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • Mixing bowl

Step 1. Pour oatmeal into a bowl

  • Pour ½ a cup fine oatmeal into a mixing bowl.

If you have medium or coarse instead of fine oatmeal, you can grind it for a few seconds to achieve a finer consistency.

Oatmeal has moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The amino acids present in oatmeal help to heal blemishes and repair damaged skin.

Step 2. Add milk

add milk

  • Slowly, add ¼-cup whole milk to the oatmeal.

While that is the standard measurement, you could vary the amount of milk you use depending upon the texture of the oatmeal and how thick you want your scrub.

Whole milk contains fats that moisturize and hydrate the skin. It has calcium as well as vitamins A and E that nourish skin cells.

Step 3. Mix well

mix well

  • Allow the oatmeal to absorb the milk for a minute.
  • Then, mix the ingredients.

The texture should be thick. If the mixture becomes thin, add more oatmeal. If it is too dry and bulky, add a little more milk to get the desired consistency.

Step 4. Add honey to the mixture

  • Add 1 tablespoon raw honey and mix it again.

Honey has incredible hydrating properties and moisturizing properties. It keeps the early signs of aging, such as wrinkles, at bay. Furthermore, it is an anti-irritant. Therefore, it is perfect for people with sensitive skin.

Honey is good for strengthening brittle nails.

Step 5. Apply the scrub

apply the scrub

Apply the scrub all over your palms and the tops of your hands up until your wrist. Carefully apply on each finger and both the thumbs, too.

You will notice the scrub is very easy to handle and will move around smoothly with the help of your fingers.

Step 6. Scrub your hands

After you've applied the scrub all over your hands, begin the scrubbing process. Rub the scrub onto the skin of your hands for 5-10 minutes in swift motions.

This will allow all the dry, dead skin cells to slough off, leaving your hands clean, soft and amazingly smooth.

Step 7. Rinse and pat dry

Once you are finished scrubbing, rinse your hands with water. The oatmeal-and-honey combination can be quite sticky. It may take you a while to get the scrub off your hands entirely.

After rinsing, gently pat your hands dry with a soft towel. Use this homemade hand scrub 2 or 3 times a month.

Homemade Hand Scrub - Granulated Sugar, Olive Oil, and Lemon Juice

Things you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup extra-fine granulated sugar
  • Fresh juice of half a lemon
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Mixing bowl

Step 1. Take out some sugar in a bowl

  • Take out ½ a cup sugar in a bowl.

Try to use extra-fine granulated and free-flowing sugar of the highest quality. The quality and the texture of the sugar used will directly affect the quality and the efficacy of the homemade scrub.

Sugar works as a natural exfoliating agent and rids your skin of dead cells.

Step 2. Mix in olive oil

mix in the olive oil

  • Add ¼ cup olive oil (preferably, extra-virgin olive oil) to the sugar.

Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer for dry and rough hands. Olive oil is an effective home remedy for lightening dark elbows. If you do not have olive oil, you can use almond oil or extra-virgin coconut oil.

Mix the ingredients well until the oil blends in with the sugar.

Step 3. Add lemon juice and mix

  • Next, add lemon juice of half a lemon to the sugar-and-olive oil mixture.

Mix this concoction again.

While you are mixing, make sure the mixture isn't too thick or too thin. A too-thick mixture will be hard to apply on your hands, while a too-thin mixture will be too messy to use.

Lemon evens out skin-tone and diminishes scars and blemishes. It works effectively to cure any form of breakouts as well.

Step 4. Apply the scrub

Apply it all over your hands liberally. Cover your palms, the tops of your hands and the entire lengths of your fingers and thumbs with the scrub.

Step 5. Scrub your hands

Using your fingers, begin the scrubbing process. Gently scrub your palms, the tops of your hands, and your fingers and thumbs for 5-10 minutes in swift motions.

Scrubbing will help remove the dead skin cells and open up the pores of your skin, allowing the oil to penetrate deep into your skin and flush it of dirt and grime. Moreover, the terrific properties of the natural ingredients used in your homemade hand scrub will make your hands super soft and smooth.

Step 6. Rinse and pat dry

Wash your hands thoroughly with cool water.

Finally, pat your hands dry with a soft towel. Use this sugar, olive oil, and lemon juice scrub once a week or every other week, depending upon how dry your hands are.

Tips on making scrubs for softer hands

  • Use cool water when washing your hands to help prevent dryness and seal in the moisture.
  • Soak your dry hands in cold milk once a week to help restore moisture and combat dryness.
  • Keep a hand moisturizer with you at all times. Use it regularly throughout the day, especially after you use a hand sanitizer.
