Method 4: The Buzz Paper Airplane

This plane is one of the record holders in the category of distance covered in flight.

Step 1. Fold the paper in half

Place the paper on a flat surface in the landscape orientation, that is the longer side will be horizontal and the shorter side will be vertical.

Fold the paper in half, so that the right edge and left edge align on top of each other. Flatten and smooth out the crease.

Unfold the paper and you will be able to see a center crease.

Step 2. Fold the corners

Fold the top right corner and align its edge with the center crease. Now, do the same for the top left corner and make a peak.

Step 3. Fold down the top peak

Fold down the top peak toward you, such that its tip touches the edge of the previous fold. Your plane will look like a trapezium now.

Step 4. Fold the sides of the plane

Take the side that is slanting and fold it to align with the center crease. Do that for the other tilted edge as well.


Step 5. Fold the top away from you

Fold the top portion away from you. The line of fold must be about ½ inch from the top.

Use edge of the table

If the paper you are using is a bit thick, use the edge of the table to make a precise fold.


Step 6. Fold the plane in half and make the wings

Fold the plane in half from the center line toward you.

To make wings, take either of the edges and fold it to align with the edge of the center fold. Do the same with the other wing and flatten out the fold.

Additional Tips

  • If you follow American paper standard then the thickness of the paper would be determined by basis weight, which is in pounds. Most other countries use the GSM (Gram per Square Meter) scale for paper thickness.
  • Use a 20-23 lb (basis weight) or 70 to 85 GSM paper for making airplanes. The heavier paper gives more stability to the plane. However, it must not be too heavy that the folds become stiff.
  • Symmetry of the folds is the utmost criteria for making a perfect airplane. Precise symmetrical folds give the plane better balance when it is airborne.
  • Smoothing out or flattening the folds is important after every step. It ensures crisp and precise folds.
  • While making a swallow airplane, if you are not confident using your hands to tear the paper, use scissors instead. A wrong tear may distort the design.
