No matter how much you love your pet, cleaning up his or her “accident” is certainly not something you look forward to, especially if it’s on your carpet. While it’s nearly impossible to be mad at them for anything (courtesy of their angelic faces), dealing with pet urine in your favorite carpet can be a nightmare.
Pets are loyal companions, devoted to filling our lives with nothing but unconditional love. They give so much in exchange for so little. However, having pets in your house means the chances are likely that they will urinate indoors at some point. And if the urine gets on your carpet, cleaning it can be difficult.
Untrained or young dogs and cats are the usual culprits, but sometimes even trained pets have accidents. If your pet is sick or aging, they can lose their bladder control.
Cleaning up pet urine as soon as possible is very important. The longer it stays, the more breeding of bacteria occurs, which can give rise to foul odor.
While there are a lot of commercial stain removers for the job, there are also some inexpensive household ingredients that can help you remove pet urine stain from your carpet as well as get rid of the overpowering stench.

Steps to Get Rid of Pet Urine Stains in Your Carpet
Things you’ll need:
- Baking soda – ¼ cup
- White vinegar – ¼ cup
- Spray bottle, with 1 cup of water
- Paper towels
Step 1. Blot up urine with paper towels
- Place a paper towel over the pet urine on your carpet to soak up the excess urine.
- Discarded the soiled paper towel and put a fresh one in its place.
- Continue blotting with fresh paper towels to absorb as much wetness as you can. Being patient in this step will yield better results.
Step 2. Mix baking soda and white vinegar in a spray bottle filled with water
- Take a spray bottle already filled with 1 cup of water.
- Add a ¼ cup of white vinegar.
- Arrange a funnel over the mouth of the spray bottle and pour an equal amount of baking soda through it.
- Close the bottle and give it a few shakes to mix the ingredients. Mixing these ingredients in a spray bottle keeps their bubbling and fizzing contained and you don’t have to deal with their volcanic fizzing.
White vinegar is one of the most effective cleaners and a remarkable stain remover. It can successfully remove the urine stain from your carpet. Baking soda is very powerful deodorizer that will expertly absorb the stench.
Step 3. Spray the mixture on the stained area
- Spray the mixture liberally over the urine stain on the carpet.
- Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes.
Step 4. Blot up the cleaning solution along with the stain
- Blot up as much of the cleaning solution as you can using fresh paper towels. Any remaining stain will lift out with it.
- For stubborn stains and odors, repeat the process if needed.
- Let the carpet dry completely to prevent any chance of mold and mildew.
Additional Tips
- Attend to urine stains as soon as possible. The longer they sit on your carpet, the harder it will be to get rid of the stain and odor.
- Wear gloves while cleaning up pet urine to maintain sanitation.
- Don’t use steam carpet cleaners to clean pet urine, as they use heat that binds the proteins present in the fluid to the carpet fibers, setting in the stain as well as odor.
- When blotting up the urine, place sheets of paper towel under the carpet below the urine stain, if possible. This will help to blot away as much of the urine as possible.
- You can also place the urine-soaked paper towel in your pet’s designated “bathroom area”. This will encourage your pet to “go” in the appropriate place. This technique can be helpful in preventing future “accidents” on your carpet if your pet is not yet potty trained.

hmmm pouring equal parts baking soda into a spray bottle filled with distilled vinegar, what could go wrong?
Hey Bern! thanks for your question.
Could you please tell us if you tried it on a dried or fresh stain.
We’d really appreciate if you could also attach a picture of your carpet in the comment section below.

I think what Bern meant was that putting vinegar and baking soda in a bottle and shaking it is not the best idea. The two ingredients when mixed cause a chemical reaction, which can cause that container to explode violently. Also, in one of your steps it’s very unclear if you mix water with the vinegar and baking soda or not? Please do not put vinegar and baking soda in a sealed container and shake it!
Dear Em
Thank you for your response. We have fixed the error.
Actually what has happened was, the spray bottle in which the solution was prepared already contained 1 cup water, hence preventing the chemical reaction. But it was an honest mistake that the water part was missing from the text. Thank you for letting us know though. We really appreciate it.
It motivates us to get better and better.
