Are your dark underarms stopping you from flaunting the new sleeveless top you just got? Are you scared of raising your hands in public?
Being cautious all the time requires sacrificing your freedom.
Dark coloration of the skin in the armpits is not a medical condition or some disease. It is actually caused by small, possiibly cumulative, mistakes like using chemical-laden hair-removing creams, shaving, using alcohol-based deodorants and antiperspirants, poor ventilation in the underarm area and a buildup of dead skin cells that have led to your skin getting darker.
So really, carelessness on your part is the cause behind those dark armpits, and you’ll need to put in sincere effort and some serious time to get your skin back to a normal tone.
Do not fret. Your underarms are not destined to be dark forever! With these simple and natural home remedies, you’ll soon be wearing your sleeveless tops again.

Method 1: Use Lemon
Nothing can beat lemons when it comes to lightening skin! A natural cleanser, lemons are 1 natural solution that help lighten your dark armpits fast.
Moreover, they contain incredible antibacterial, antiseptic and acidic properties that help exfoliate the dead skin cells and thus lighten your skin.
This can also help minimize odors associated with armpits, since the cause is generally related to bacteria growth and harmful chemicals in deodorants.
Single-Step Treatment: Rub lemon slices on your armpits
- Just grab a couple of lemon slices and rub them on your underarms before you take a bath.
- Let the lemon juice sit on your skin for 5 minutes, then wash it off.
- Finish with a moisturizer after your bath, as lemon tends to dry out the skin.
Do this every day for up to 15 days to observe significant results.
Method 2: Use Potato
Potatoes contain malic acid, an excellent lightening agent that helps lighten your skin tone. They also contain starch that has emollient properties that help smooth and soften the skin.
Step 1. Peel a potato
- Peel a potato and thinly slice it.
Step 2. Thinly slice the potato and apply for 25 min
- Cut the potato into thin slices.
- Rub a slice of potato on each of your underarms.
- Leave the potato juice on your skin for 20 to 25 minutes to dry, then wash it off with warm water.
Use this remedy once daily for effective results.
Method 3: Use Baking Soda and Lemon
Baking soda is an incredible exfoliating agent that helps remove dead skin cells and unclog skin pores, in turn lightening your dark underarms.
Lemon, on the other hand, is a powerful antiseptic and antibacterial as well as a natural lightening agent.
Things you’ll need:
- Baking soda – 1 tablespoon
- Lemon juice – 1 tablespoon
Step 1. Pour lemon juice into baking soda
- Take 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a bowl.
- Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to it.
Step 2. Mix the ingredients and apply it for 5 min
- Mix the ingredients together thoroughly.
- Apply the paste on your underarms.
- Scrub it around for 5 minutes, then wash it off using lukewarm water.
- Finish by moisturizing your skin with an oil free moisturizer.
Repeat 3 or 4 times a week for effective results.
Method 4: Use Milk
Milk contains a plethora of nutrients that help minimize the darkening of your skin, making the skin tone lighter along with smoothing and softening the skin.
Single-Step Treatment: Apply milk every day for 15 min
- Pour about 2 tablespoons of milk in a small bowl or cup.
- Soak a cotton ball in the milk and rub it on your underarms.
- Leave it to dry for 15 minutes, then wash it off using lukewarm water.
Repeat the remedy every day for up to 3 weeks to observe desired results.
Additional Tips
- Always use natural moisturizers like aloe vera or coconut oil to moisturize your underarms.
- Do not shave your skin. Shaving can cause discoloration of your armpits.
- Try waxing for hair removal instead, as this removes hair from the very roots as well as accumulated dead skin cells, which leaves the skin lighter and softer.
- Avoid using deodorants and antiperspirants, as they contain harmful chemicals and contribute to darkening your underarms. Switch to natural deodorants containing baking soda, coconut oil or rose water or make one for yourself at home.
- Say no to hair-removal creams. The chemicals in them can cause rashes, irritation and itching along with darkening the skin.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes. They trap sweat, thus blocking the way for your skin to breathe, giving rise to bacteria growth and rashes.
- Practice regular exfoliation of your skin and do not compromise on basic hygiene.
- Do not neglect bathing, as this can lead to an accumulation of sweat and bacteria causing pigmentation. Add a few drops any citrus oil to your bath for a pleasant smell and to prevent discoloration of your armpits.
- Control your weight. Diabetes or obesity can be major reasons behind dark underarms. High levels of insulin lead to pigmentation, so keep an eye on your weight!

Hey Leanna
Thank you for your comment.
If baking soda is not giving you expected results, try using lemon, which is the best ingredient for skin lightening. But we request you to do a patch test before going further.
Hope we were able to help.

can teen agers can use this..like 13 years old?
Hey Jean
Thank you for your comment.
We won’t suggest lemon for 13-year-olds, as the skin might be very sensitive and may have reactions after application.
However, you can go forward with method 2 and 4. Potato and milk both are natural ingredients and won’t have any adverse effect.
Hope we were able to help.

Lemon juice doesn’t work on me.
As soon as I apply, it stings like hell.
I applied just before as I’ve shaved my underarms earlier today. Irritates & pains.
Same goes wth baking soda too.
If we aren’t supposed to shave through shaving or hair removal cream. Then shpuld we just let them grow & braid them? lol.
Not all of places have parlours & stuff where they live so. Wherever I see lemon & baking soda! Did anyone ever try this atleast? Instead of going on & on about it!
Dear Sujatha
Thank you for your comment.
First of all, you should be very careful while shaving your underarms. It is suggested that soon after shaving, you should apply a mild moisturizer.
As you have applied lemon soon after shaving, without doing a patch test, it may be the cause of your sting.
We request you to go ahead with the milder remedies like potato and milk.
Do let us know how they turned out for you.

Dear Madonna
Yes, you can aply coconut oil to your lady parts too as it has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. You can apply it gently to your armpits or private parts after shaving as you would use a regular moisturizing lotion.
Hope we were able to help.

Can i use methods 1,2 & 4 altogether?
Hi Kanij
Thank you for your query.
Yes, you can combine the three methods together. However, do a patch test on your skin first, to know how your skin reacts towards the treatment.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I always use deodorants for my underarm. I didnt notice that my underarm gets darker day by day. So I use the method 1 which is to rub a slice of lemon on my armpit. And yes, it’s very effective. But my question is after rubbing my armpit with a slice of lemon, I washed it with lukewarm water and few hours later, it smells bad. I dont wanna use those branded deodorants anymore. Can you recommend me some natural ingredients for this bad smelly underarm? Natural ingredients that would help my underarm smells good the whole day. Thanks

Hi! Im a teenager and I have dark armpits
what method would u recommend for me to use? and how many days will it take to get great results?
I’m 14.
Will Toothpaste and Baking Soda work together?
Hey Miranda
You are 14 so we won’t suggest you combine baking soda and toothpaste. It may cause more harm than good if you have sensitive skin.
In your case, it is best to use the milk method or if you wish to use baking soda or baking soda-lemon, do a patch test beforehand to see how your skin reacts towards it.
Thank you
